About Me
Flexible and wireless sensing, event-driven edge AI for SHM, and geometry-driven mechanics for smart composite structures
Hello! I am Hassan A. Mahmoud, a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Mechanics of Composites for Energy and Mobility (MCEM) Lab at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). My research develops flexible, printable, and wireless sensors for structural health monitoring, together with event-driven edge-AI systems that make sensing more power efficient—bridging materials, device fabrication, and intelligent readout for smart composite structures.
My research interests include:
- Flexible, printable, and wireless sensors for structural health monitoring
- Smart materials and multifunctional sensing platforms
- Event-driven sensing, edge AI, and low-power IoT systems
- Wearable electronics and human–machine interfaces
- Mechanics of composites, fracture, and bonded joints
- Fabrication, characterization, and modeling of smart structures
My Bio
I completed my PhD in Mechanical Engineering at KAUST (2025) with a dissertation on ultra-thin, wireless, and flexible sensors for smart structures. Before that, I earned my MSc (2021) and BSc (2017) in Mechanical Design and Production from Cairo University, Faculty of Engineering.
My research spans ultrasensitive crack-based wireless strain sensors, printable and e-tattoo LC sensors for near-field interrogation, laser-induced graphene platforms for flexible temperature and strain sensing, and stretchable capacitive sensors for wearable human–machine interfaces. In parallel, I work on event-driven and edge-AI structural health monitoring—including semantic perception on Qualcomm platforms and hybrid ultra-low-power wake-up SHM nodes—and on geometry-driven strategies to enhance toughness in composite bonded joints.
Across these themes, I combine hands-on fabrication with electromechanical characterization and system-level demonstration, from laboratory sensors to real-time wireless readout and competition demos. I also contribute to applied SHM efforts for composite and energy infrastructure, including work with the ENERCOMP consortium and Saudi Aramco.
